During air pollution episodes pollutant concentrations are highest, and the related adverse health impact on the public should therefore be reliably evaluated. The meteorological conditions prevailing in the course of episodes are at the same time commonly the most difficult to model with the computing tools presently available.

European Union nevertheless requires practical measures to be taken, if air quality limit values are exceeded.
