Ñ Fine-scale (MM5 1 km res.) improves the quality of the meteorological forecast during winter time calm weather conditions in Oslo compared to larger scale (HIRLAM 10 km) modelling.
Ñ Improved meteorological forecasts also improve air quality forecasting in urban areas.
Ñ An overestimation of the near surface inversion strenght is found in Oslo, which partly can explain overestimation of air concentrations.
Ñ Further improvement of the fine-scale meteorological forecasts would need:
o Include parameterization schemes of the Urban Boundary Layer.
o Improve the parameterization of snow processes, melting/freezing etc.
o Improve surface data on snow/ice, albedo, moisture, landuse and SST.
