- A severe pollution episode caused by temperature inversion during persisting winter high pressure conditions has been analysed.
- The deep inversion was originated by the advection of warm air, at a height around 1000m agl, caused by the incoming high pressure.
- The lower layers circulation was decoupled from the synoptic flow and appeared to be mainly determined by local and mesoscale terrain features.
- To model (and forecast) local meteorology and air quality the superposition of different scale phenomena have to be taken into account.
